2013 Superintendent's Revenge

Steve & Renee Willis teamed with Bruce & Pam Brushwood to take 1st Place in
The 2013 Superintendent's Revenge.

58 players enjoyed a fine breakfast buffet at The Stoney Creek Bar and Grill before teeing it up in the 2013 Superintendent's Revenge on Sunday, November 10th.

All teams enjoyed the Monocan/Shamokin rotation as never before given the creative course set up by Fred Biggers, Kevin Moore and Matt Burch. The sun was spectacular and the wind was howling. The course was in great condition and almost all the greens had one(or two) cups cut in spots that don't usually see much traffic.
Good times had by all. Mark your calender for the 2014 Member events.

Why our greens are so good...

Preventative maintenance is an integral part of successful golf course management. Golfers view aerification as an inconvenience that takes the greens out of play for a day, pulling cores from the greens and leaving holes that can affect putting for many days before healing. To add insult to injury, aerification is best done in many part of the country during mid-summer, at the height of the playing season and when most greens are in prime condition. But a golfer needs to understand how important aerification is to producing healthy turf. Aerification (also known as aeration) achieves three important objectives. It relieves soil compaction, it provides a method to improve the soil mixture around the highest part of a green's roots and it reduces or prevents the accumulation of excess thatch. Like so many things, the quality of a good putting green is more than skin deep.

2013 Justice Cup underway

The 2013 Justice Cup, a series of matches held throughout the year, will have teams from Wintergreen, Glade Springs, The Greenbrier and The Sporting Club competing in a modified stableford scoring format.

The first event was a rain shortened competition at Glade Springs, played on the Cobb Course.  Two rain delays foreced the match into a nine hole event with the host team collecting the most points.

Wintergreen currently sits in third place with the next event at Devils Knob on Monday, July 22nd.  Eleven members and a professional will navigate the slick greens and narrow fairways.

Stay tuned for results.  The matches are open to spectators.  Come on out and root on the team Monday at 10:00 am.

Preparations under way for 2013 golf season

Preparations for the 2013 golf season are well under way.  Despite the recent snow storm, the golf staff and maintenance team have been diligent in getting ready for a great season.

New golf shop product is making its way on the floor for the Spring.  Footjoy, Oxford and Greg Norman apparel just to name a few, are here as well as a nice complement of outerwear, pull overs  and sweaters.  Perfect for the start of the season.  Come in and see a sampling of the new offerings!

Operationally, we have made an adjustment to the bag drop and starter's area (see pictures) at Stoney Creek.

In an effort to create  a more effective and professional greeting for our members and guests, the bag drop area and Guest Service Attendants will be positioned closer to the golf shop and restaurant.  This change will also free up parking space.

From a "curb appeal" perspecitve, members and guests that frequent Stoney Creek may also notice that the old railroad ties have been removed from the parking lot.  Also getting cleaned up are the pot holes and low spots in the parking lot area.

The bag drop booth will now become the starter's booth!  This booth will come complete with extra sand bottles, daily cart rule signage, a starter's desk and a starter!  Once golfers have registered in the golf shop, as always, they will be required to give their receipt to the starter.

We feel strongly that these small changes will continue to enhance the golf experience at Stoney Creek.

Off Season Golf Stretches

Top to Bottom in Ten Minutes

Now is the time to think about getting ready for the upcoming spring golf season. It’s easy to get started with a program that targets some important golf swing parts and takes less than 10 minutes. Remember to address both sides and breath into each stretch for 10 seconds. All stretches should be performed relative to the players' flexibility, never beyond the point of discomfort.
Just a few series per week will enhance your game and help prevent injury when you get the call to the first tee this spring!!
Stretch back of wrist
Stretch forearm

Arm at 90 deg., pull across chest
Hand between shoulders, pull elbow

Lower back flat, lower slowly

Right over left, then left over right

Align knee over ankle, stretch hip flexor
Straighten heel to ground for calf stretch

Leaning forward into hamstring stretch
